Sustainable Development is defined as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland Commission, 1987)

Planning and Sustainable recreational development

The Planning system has the principal role in determining where infrastructure is located in the Lough Neagh Wetlands. Lough Neagh is covered by 9 different Area Plans. These are:

2.	Ballymena Area Plan 1986-2001
3.	Belfast Metropolitan Area Plan 2015 (draft)
4.	Cookstown Area Plan 2010
5.	Craigavon Area Plan 2010
6.	Dungannon and South Tyrone 2010
7.	Lisburn Area Plan 2001
8.	Magherafelt Area Plan 2015 (draft)
9.	Magherafelt Area Plan 1976-1996
